Meredith, the Caretaker

As the seventh season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy gets closer and closer and fans begin to count the days until September 23, more and more news begins to spill out as scripts continue to be written. On the heels of the news that Mandy Moore’s character will be returning in the season’s sixth episode, we are also coming to learn that all may not be as it seems when we last left the doctors of Seattle Grace Mercy West.

Though it had appeared that most, if not all, of the Grey’s Anatomy characters (save for newbies April and Jackson) had been paired off by the end of the sixth season finale, some of these romantic decisions may be reconsidered when the show picks back up – namely the relationship between Alex and Lexie, which was left on shaky terms as it was. Hell, it never even was stable to begin with.

It also seems that April and Jackson will be bunking up in Meredith’s house, also joining Derek, Alex, and Lexie. How this move will come about remains to be seen, but it is certainly going to bring an interesting new dynamic to the living situation of Meredith and Derek – especially since, if you remember, April had a not-so-innocent crush on Derek during the last arc of season six. Though April portrayer Sarah Drew claims that April’s crush is now long gone, that doesn’t mean it will be completely forgotten… or will it? Let’s hope so, as both Megan and I are hoping to see Alex+April and Lexie+Jackson pairings in the season to come.

One of the most interesting developments of the upcoming season, however, is that of Meredith’s role. Returning from maternity leave and ready to jump back into action, Ellen Pompeo is getting Meredith back to the center of the series, as she becomes the caretaker for all of the show’s other characters – a role she slipped into beautifully by the end of last season. But taking care of everyone else comes at a price: TVGuide.com reports that James Tupper’s new doctor refuses to clear Meredith to allow her to return to work, which Pompeo admits leads to some “frustrating episodes” for Meredith. And it also begs the question of who will take care of Meredith? The assumption would be Derek, but that doesn’t mean he will, as he still doesn’t know about Meredith’s miscarriage and is having personal crises of his own.

So, are you ready for Season Seven to begin yet? Sounds to me like Grey’s Anatomy is getting revamped in an utterly fantastic way as a result of the harrowing season finale, and I absolutely cannot wait to see just what is coming up in the twenty-four episodes to come.
