Grey’s Anatomy Wonders “What If?”
With well over 150 episodes under its belt and an uncertain future regarding its cast, Grey’s Anatomy is making sure to take advantage of every moment, and they’re not letting up with their “out of the ordinary” episodes. This February, Grey’s Anatomy will take another journey – one different from anything anyone could have ever imagined would happen.
In February, Grey’s Anatomy will present an episode entitled “If/Then,” which will answer the question of “What would have happened if Derek had stayed with Addison and Ellis had never died?” The episode, which will be from Meredith’s perspective as she takes a look at how her life could have turned out, will present an alternate universe for the doctors of Seattle Grace (Mercy West?) that promises to take us on a wild ride.
Of course, no alternate universe would be complete without the return of some familiar faces. Kate Walsh will return for the episode as Addison Montgomery, and not only that, but she will be returning to her relationship with Patrick Dempsey’s Derek. Kate Burton will also be returning as Meredith’s mother, Ellis Grey, who was last seen in the third season when she died. TVLine is also reporting that a familiar face that was killed off in the sixth season finale will also be returning, though it remains to be seen just as to who that could be. Of course, all of this calls into question as to whether or not other past favorites will return for the one-off episode, such as Katherine Heigl’s Izzie, TR Knight’s George, or Isaiah Washington’s Burke, but TVLine reports that, at this moment, no other former series regular stars are expected to return.
How do you feel about Grey’s Anatomy going the alternate universe route? It should be really interesting to see what the writers cook up for the characters, because there are so many things that could happen. Plus, it also begs the question: how will they address Izzie and George’s absences? And will the Mercy Westers still be at Seattle Grace? But the most important question of all: Will we get to see more of the classic drunk Meredith and Cristina, which we haven’t seen in almost five years?
Grey’s Anatomy will return with all-new episodes on Thursday, January 5, 2012.

there are two ways I could see someone being brought back from the season six finale. Either they have it so percy (the guy who died in Bailey’s arms) survived, or Gary Clark (the shooter) is the one who comes back, as in he doesn’t kill himself but kills the Chief.
Too bad they won’t be bringing back TR Knight. Would have been great to see what it would have been like if he survived and was the one picked as Chief Resident.
It is indeed sad that TR won’t be back, but I’m betting that it happened one of two ways: he was either asked back and declined, or, it was assumed he wouldn’t agree to reappearing and so he wasn’t even asked. I’m thinking it’s probably the latter, just based on the sentiments he made towards the show and even Shonda herself in his first interview after leaving the show. Which is terribly saddening. Though I’m sure they’ll have a good way of working around his character, because I’m sure that George is going to be on every viewer’s mind for this episode.
As for who could be back from the shooting, I, too, think it’s probably either Percy or Gary Clark. My first impression was Gary, though I’m not sure why, or how he would fit into the story. Percy would, I suppose, probably make more sense, and seeing how the season six finale made (almost) everyone love him, I’m willing to bet he’s the one that will be bad. If it’s Reed, however, I’m sure that heads will roll…
Either way, I simply can’t wait for this episode. It’s going to be really interesting.
I can’t wait either. Between following you guys on twitter, and Jesse Williams’ inadvertent tweet with info about the first show after break, I am counting the days until it’s back.
Yeah, Percy makes the most sense. And if it was Reed, I don’t see that as being as bad as people think (she was annoying, but there has to be at least one annoying person; Izzie was it until she left). I wasn’t a fan of Percy; but he did remind me of an early Karev, without the sex.
I really liked the way they worked around George’s memory in the episode with his mom this season; the residents were right, he would have likely been Chief resident. But I must say, it is interesting to see how the slightly inept April does it this season…..she reminds me of a female him, but without the inappropriate sex with the wrong women LOL.
