Today is ABC’s day at the Television Critics Association midseason press tour, and TVLine is reporting that ABC has announced early pick-ups for an eight season of Grey’s Anatomy and fifth season of Private Practice, which should come as no surprise, but should still be quite comforting to get some real confirmation.

The real story, however, is that Courtney Cox’s comedy Cougar Town has been picked up for a third season, amid speculation that the show was on the bubble and would not return for another year. Also strange is that ABC Sunday staples Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters were not listed among the early pick-ups.
